Read This and Do Yourself a Favor
Among the sources I consulted last summer in preparation for a class I’m teaching was a small book on memoir writing called Shimmering Images: A Handy Little Guide to Writing Memoir. The book recommended capturing the “shining moments” of our lives, pinning each of them to text so that others can enjoy or learn from them. Dorcas Smucker doesn’t need this book. She's already been there and done that.
Shimmering images and shining moments abound in Footprints on the Ceiling, Dorcas Smucker’s newest published collection of stories and reflections originally written as content for a monthly newspaper column. Astute observation and reflection and “mad” writing skills are the main things that make Dorcas’ life seem filled with shining moments. In reality, her life is the stuff of which all of our lives are made. This is the allure of her writing: we begin to see shining moments in our own ordinary lives, and a desire stirs inside us to savor and share these moments.
Aging parents, travel and ministry, storytelling tips, picking and preserving fruit, parting and loss, growth and celebration, rest and rejuvenation–it’s all there–and more, and all worth pondering. Sometimes it’s worth laughing about or crying over.
Many of the stories in Footprints on the Ceiling were written about events that occurred since Dorcas had written the previous column for the newspaper. Those stories are about life in the Smucker household as it was right then–with a pastor/teacher/grass seed warehouse owner husband and father, a busy-brained and diligent homemaker wife and mother, and teenagers and young adults with colorful personalities entering and exiting the scene at a lively pace.
That isn’t all, however. Some of the stories in this book happened decades ago, and the telling of these stories is enriched by the view from a distance. Footprints on the Ceiling refers to one snippet of Paul and Dorcas’ “how we met” saga. I especially enjoyed the “Off to Bible School” chapter where Dorcas writes of having attended the same school in Arkansas where I attended ahead of her.
I will give away one autographed copy of Footprints on the Ceiling (supplied by Dorcas) to someone who comments on this blog post. If you include a shimmering image or shining moment story idea from your own life, I’ll add your name twice for the drawing. Check this space for an announcement of the winner. I’ll make the announcement on Nov. 25, one week from this publication date, and will seek mailing address information at that time. If the winner does not come forward for a week following that, I will draw a second name, and repeat that till a winner is found.
Footprints on the Ceiling is available for $15 per book, postage included. You can mail a check to Dorcas Smucker, 31148 Substation Drive, Harrisburg, OR 97446. US addresses only. To send a copy to Canada or overseas, email Dorcas at dorcassmucker@gmail.com.

I'd love to be entered for this drawing. One shining moment in my life was the moment I got to walk across the stage and receive a diploma at FBEP. All the blood, sweat, and tears were worth it in that moment. My email is misshostetler@yahoo.com

My idea for a story - my son buttoning his top shirt button and saying it is worse than suicide because you're choking but still live.

I would love to win her newest book! Shinging moment from my life - each time I stand up for myself, and what I believe in, even if its unpopular or makes others mad, for me it is a shinign moment because I know God is growing my courage. :-)

I read Dorcas's blog faithfully! I would love to have a copy of her book. The most recent shining moment in my life was when my English professor wrote a very complimentary note on my literary research paper. I reread that note for a week! My email is momofmany08@gmail.com

I love Dorcas Smucker and her blogs. I met my husband at Jr. Grange camp when he was only 12 years old. The top age for the camp was 14, and he was tall for his age so I assumed he was 14. I was 14. Imagine my surprise when I found out he was younger than I. God knew what was in store for us though, and we celebrated 40 years of marriage last week :-)

I have wanted to read her books for a long time. Shimmering images, shining moments? So, so many of them... One of the biggest being the birth of my son. It seemed that everything went as unaccording to plan as possible, resulting in a 10-day stay in the NICU for my tiny boy. It was a rough, exhausting, pain-filled era in our lives- but then one evening, we strapped that little bitty boy into a great, big car seat and took him home, and he was ours, all ours, and we loved him so much, and it was all so worth it. That baby boy is now a healthy 8-mo- old, and quite generous with his sweet, wet kisses. :)

I would love to be the winner of this book and place it in our church library. We have her other books except Tea and Trouble Brewing . As soon as the local bookstore restocks we will be placing this book in the library as well. I enjoy her books, in reading your blog come to find out I attended the same Bible School in Arkansas as she did. A shining moment in my life is when I met my husband at the same Bible School.email is amamast88@gmail.com

I would enjoy winning Dorcas' newest book to add to my collection. A shining/life changing moment for me was last winter when God impressed on my heart the truth of the verse, "I will not leave you orphans." Seeing that worked out in real life has been so encouraging.

enjoying this tour....and have hopes of adding this book to my collection of Dorcas' books; I have all the others! As for a shining moment, that would be my delight in joining the grandma rank

I love Dorcas's writings and would love to win this. One shining moment in my life was this past summer when my 4 year old grandson and I rode the Amtrak from Ohio to Pa. He loves trains and was so excited that he needed no entertainment other than looking out the window at the sights. There was no one sitting apposite us, so we got to run back and forth between the seats to look out each side. I'd love to do it again sometime. My email is twilaburkholder@gmail.com

A shining moment...As a first year teacher, one of my goals was for my students to enjoy writing. The first week, when I announced Creative Writing class, 21 third and fourth graders groaned. Two weeks later, when I announced Creative Writing class, 21 third and fourth graders cheered! That was definitely a shining moment. And, I would love to win the book!
Thank you!

I've been a "Life in the Shoe" follower for years. As I thought of shining moments, they all seemed rather...ordinary! But the common thread was that when I affirmed/blessed someone, invariably I got affirmation in return, not always right away, not always by the same person I affirmed. -Sharon Mast

I'd love to have a copy of this book. Dorcas and I connect on nearly every one of her blog posts. Shining moments? What could be 'shinier' than actually seeing and holding our first grandson? Getting to know him is an awesome privilege. Thanks for the chance to win this book. -Jo Yoder

I enjoy reading "Life in the Shoe". I would love to win her book! A recent shining moment was when my husband recognized me for the first time after coming out of the anesthesia after open heart surgery. The doctors weren't sure if he would survive the surgery. Hello! I couldn't get a comment to post on your blog so I thought I would try this!
Great review! I have read Dorcas' other books and enjoy her style! I like how she takes day to day happenings and brings lessons out of them!
And in reading your blog I found out your from KS. My sister Liz married Doug Yutzy and they live in yoder now. that was a neat connection for me and I'm thinking I may have meet your husband when we were out to visit. We were at Walmart 2 years ago and he was our cashier.
Blessings to you!
Dorcas Siegrist
I'm not sure what's up that prevents some comments from posting, but I'm glad you found a way to get this message to me. Thanks for making these connections with Doug and Liz. Doug's grandma (Alta) and my mom are age mates and first cousins who grew up together in Iowa. Yes, the Wal-Mart cashier is my hubby! Glad you met him. Mrs. I (MIriam)

Thanks for the review.... my shining moment came when I watched 3 former students walk across the tiny stage at our small school and receive their diplomas. I cried. A lot.

I too read her blog regularly and enjoy her writing. Would be delighted to read her new book. A shining moment that comes to my mind is the blessing of having my daughter off of seizure medication. She had been on medication for about 10 years, and has been off now for a year! We were very grateful when we were told her EEG is normal!!! Praise God for healing! Janet

Would love to have a free copy! A shining moment for me comes when I do something for a friend that to me seems fairly insignificant, and yet I can tell by their response it meant a lot to them. It encourages me to never let an opportunity go because it's "not important enough." Valerie

My sister, Susanna, introduced me to Dorcas' blog a number of years ago. (You, Miriam, may have introduced her to Dorcas?) Anyway, it was a thrill, and a shining moment, about 5 1/2 years ago, when I spied Dorcas in the boarding line at the Denver Airport! Of course she had no idea who I was, so after introducing myself, she sat with me on the flight to Portland! And now we're FB friends too!

I would love to read this latest book too! My story idea is about a Very Long Weekend with New Dog that I had recently. I had to pick up and care for a dog that my husband found for us, while he was gone (on call) for the weekend. (I am not a dog person. This may be an understatement.) After many misadventures, including the destruction of a rather expensive special collar, the dog has now run away for good. I am not sure if this could be called a shining moment in my life, but I am sure it's something Dorcas could have spun into a funny story.

I can often identify with Dorcas' posts since I'm at the same stage of life with adult children and teens. I would love to add the new book to my collection.

Well, of course I would love to have this book! I enjoy the snippets you share from Dorcas's blog, as well as the times I meander over there myself. As far as shimmering incidents... well, the most shining moment I can think of lately is when I was slowly and gingerly descending the stairs in stocking feet with a burden of laundry when suddenly both feet flew out from under me and I descended somewhat more rapidly and dramatically than I had intended, and landed in an elegant sprawl at the bottom. This would probably not have amused my family so heartily if I had not often extolled the virtues of carefulness, especially regarding staircases. Fortunately I was not much wounded, so it did strike me as funny even as I struck the floor.

Har, Har, Hannah. This is funny only because you were not hurt. Thanks for sharing that shining moment.

Your idea to have shimmer or shining moments has left me with a warm glow after reading so many. I enjoy your blog when Dorcas mentions you on her blog. Thanks for the warm glow. Don't enter me in the drawing- I just won from another blogger, but LOVE to see what other bloggers say about her book.

Please enter my name in the drawing.
One warm-fuzzy moment (shining if you please) was yesterday at Wal-Mart. I noticed the check-out clerk's name was Linda, and then I heard her talk to her colleague who had come to that check-out counter, calling her Linda. After I mentioned that my name is Linda, too, the customer behind me said hers is too. Four Linda's! Then the customer in front of me in line asked, "Does Lynn count?"
Thy sis.

I'd enjoy reading this book! A shining moment: whispering with my 2 year old daughter at bedtime about pink llamas.
By Rosina, at 11/22/2014
I would love to read this book! The moment that popped into my head, though I'm not sure how "shining" it was... (lol!) is the time I chased a run-away tire down the hill behind our house. Just picture a shrieking me, running pell mell at top speed, losing her slip-on shoes and almost ALMOST catching up in her stocking feet, with a husband yelling at the top of his lungs, "Run faster!!!" I never did catch up and it picked up speed and crossed a really busy road at the bottom of the hill, just seconds behind a vehicle. (Could've been really bad because it was going at least 45 mph) Yeah, we laughed about that pell-mell running down the hill mental picture for awhile!!
